UCU Strikes Again

Updated: Dec 13, 2022

Teachers, tutors, and students gathered in Kings Cross in London on Wednesday, November 30th to protest pay fees, poor contracts and pensions cut.

Protestors came from across the UK to participate in the rally.

The University and College Union has been battling to get fair pay and more stable work contracts, especially now in the cost-of-living crisis.

The rally featured speakers like Dr Jo Grady, head of the UCU, former Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn, and other representatives.

Dr Jo Grady said: “Our union is stronger than it has ever been”.

Maya, a tutor at Royal Holloway, had to say: “Universities have really been treating their staff really badly, whether it’s working conditions, people working up to 60 hours per week.”

“Our working conditions are their (students) learning conditions”.

The students at the rally showed a lot of support for the cause, also with their own signs like “Whose pockets hold the tuition fees I paid?”

Two students shared their thoughts: “I’m paying so much money and my lecturers aren’t being paid enough. I missed half a module last year due to the strikes.”

“We rely so much on our teachers; the quality of education is tied directly to how fairly they’re being compensated for the work that they’re doing. It’s very unfair.

The rally then moved onto the streets of London with chants like “Who’s education? Our education!” and “Students and workers, unite and fight.”

Wednesday’s protest follows two other days of protests at London Met.

Strikes are over for this year but the UCU has stated that if demands aren’t met, strikes will continue in the new year.
